A painter by trade, he humbly asked to serve the Lord in poverty and obedience as a Dominican Brother. Fra Angelico, as he came to be known, is now regarded as the greatest painter of his generation. He lived in obscurity for more than 10 years before he was first commissioned to do a series of paintings for a monastery in Florence. His fame grew and he earned large sums of money for his paintings, but he gave all of it to his Dominican order.
